French Religious Wars 1562-1598. Siege of Chartres. Huguenots besieged Chartres at the end of February 1568, breaching the north wall with artillery. Assault launched on 7 March unsuccessful . Sappers work to undermine bastion forming part of city defences. Siege lifted on signature of Peace of Longjumeau, 23 March . Engraving by Jacques Tortorel (fl1568-1590) and Jean-Jacques Perrissin (1536-1617) from their series on the Huguenot Wars, c1570.
