Knight of Malta also called Knight Hospitaller. Member of the Order of St John of Jerusalem founded end 11th century, dedicated to fighting the infidel and treating sick and wounded. When their headquarters in Rhodes was conquered Muslim forces, they were granted an alternative base on the Mediterranean island of Malta. Woodcut by Jost Amman, 16th century.
