Conjugation is a form of sexual reproduction in which pieces of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) called plasmids are transferred between bacteria through a structure called a pilus. The bacteria seen here are Escherichia coli (E. coli), a normal inhabitant of the human intestine (background). However, under certain conditions its numbers may increase (by the process seen here), causing infection.
