Cholera prevention. Satirical artwork portraying a woman's efforts to protect herself during an outbreak of cholera. Cholera is a bacterial infection of the intestines that was often fatal before modern treatments were developed. Chlorinated lime, smoke, herbs, and protective footwear were all used. At lower right, the similarly protected dog carries a syringe and a sign saying 'You need not fear'. This artwork dates from around 1820. This version is from the German book 'Die Karikatur und Satire in der Medizin' (Caricature and Satire in Medicine, 1921) by the German art historian and physician Eugen Hollander (1867-1932).
