Transcontinental telephone line construction. Horse and cart team hauling redwood poles near stake number 585, three miles east of Golconda, Nevada, USA. The poles will be used by the American Telephone and Telegraph Company in the construction of the transcontinental telephone line. This pioneering achievement was opened in 1915. This photograph is from a collection of unpublished images, dating from the 1860s to the 1920s, taken for 'The Pageant of America: A Pictorial History of the United States' (1925-1929).
