Edouard Eugene Desire Branly (1844-1940), French physicist and engineer, working at his desk. Branly's inventions were mainly in wireless telegraphy. In around 1890, he invented a coherer, a device used as a detector in radio communications. This photograph is courtesy of Charles Scribner's Sons, New York. It was published in 'The March of Commerce' (1927), volume 4 of 'The Pageant of America: A Pictorial History of the United States'. This was a 15-volume series that commemorated 150 years since the founding of the USA in 1776.
