During ovulation a single egg is passed into the oviduct (funnel, left) by actions of the fimbriae (tentacle-like). It then passes thorough the Fallopian tube (top) and into the uterus (far right). The ampulla (the middle section of the Fallopian tube) is the most common site of fertilisation. If fertilised, the egg implants in the endometrium (inner membrane) of the uterus and develops into a foetus. If unfertilised it passes out of the body through the vagina (not shown) during menstruation.
