Ocean current speed. Computer visualisation of ocean current speeds at 15 metres depth. Current speed is coloured from black (zero metres per second), through red (0.3 m/s), orange (0.5 m/s), yellow (0.6 m/s) to white (0.8 m/s). This model is part of the Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean (ECCO) project. It was created on supercomputers at NASA using data gathered from ocean sensors and satellites. Major ocean currents can be seen, such as the Gulf Stream (along the eastern coast of Central and North America), the Agulhas current (eastern side of southern Africa) and the Kuroshio current (eastern coast of Japan). The ECCO models aim to help scientists better understand the role the ocean plays in climate change and climate prediction.
