King penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus) chicks awaiting the return of their parents who are foraging far away at sea, feeding mainly on oil-rich lantern fish. This penguin is found in Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions. It produces two chicks every three years. The chicks are covered in brown or silvery down, which is moulted at about a year old. They grow to full size in a few weeks, but are tended for around 40 days before joining a large creche while their parents go to sea to fish. Photographed on South Georgia.
