Husvik whaling station, South Georgia, with a whaling ship (right) rusting away on a slipway, with seals in the foreground. This is one of several abandoned whaling stations in South Georgia. Commercial whaling ceased here in the 1960s because of declining whale stocks, but most of the equipment was left in place in anticipation of a future resumption. Stocks did not recover as hoped, so the site remains abandoned and visited mainly by tourists.
