James McKeen Cattell (1860-1944), US psychologist. Cattell carried out his graduate studies in Germany, later becoming the first professor of psychology in the USA, at the University of Pennsylvania. His work helped establish psychology as a science. Cattell later worked at Columbia University, where he was dismissed for opposing US involvement in World War I. He also edited and published journals, including Psychological Review and Science.
