Oblique-slip fault, artwork. Faults occur where the upper part of the Earth's crust breaks due to the stress of processes such as continental drift. In an oblique-slip fault the two sides of the fault slide against each other as well being pulled apart. The forces pulling the fault apart cause the hanging wall, the upper side of the sloping fault plane (on the left-hand side of this fault), to drop down.
