Sugar cane harvest. Man setting light to sugar cane (Saccharum sp.) plants in a field to remove the leaves that would hinder the sugar cane cutters in their work. This is the first step in the harvesting of the sugar cane. Every night, 6 days a week, a burner team sets fire to 4 or 5 fields, burning several kilometres of plantations in one night. The process is controversial as is produces enormous toxic clouds of smoke, and kills hundreds of wild animals trapped in the fire. Photographed in Brazil, in August.
