Moa skeletons, 19th century artwork. The moa (initially classed as genus Dinornis) is an extinct, flightless bird that was found in New Zealand. This artwork shows a collection of moa skeletons in Canterbury Museum, New Zealand, in 1873. The species shown here are the Eastern moa (Dinornis crassus), Upland moa (Dinornis didformis), South Island giant moa (Dinornis giganteus) and the Heavy-footed moa (Dinornis elephantopus). Dinornis casuarinus is now considered a synonym of the Eastern moa. Several of these moas have since been reclassified in different genera.
