Celestial globe. This 17th century celestial globe was designed by the Dutch publisher and cartographer Willem Blaeu (1571-1638), who learnt his craft as a student of the famous Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe. Blaeu began producing both Earth globes and celestial globes when he moved to Amsterdam. The globe is tilted to indicate the Earth's tilt relative to the plane of the ecliptic (the plane of the planetary orbits). The artworks on the globe are mythological representations of the constellations.
