Pyogenic granuloma. Light micrograph of a section through a pyogenic granuloma skin growth. The skin's surface is across top, with the raised area at centre consisting of a vascular overgrowth of blood vessels, with an exudate on top. A pyogenic granuloma is neither pyogenic (producing pus) nor a granuloma (inflamed cells). It is a harmless overgrowth of tiny blood vessels, which often appears after minor injury and is prone to bleeding. The growth will normally disappear without treatment but can be removed by electrocautery, cryosurgery or more conventional surgery.
