Congo deforestation. Logger using a chainsaw to cut down a mature tree in a tropical rainforest in the Congo Basin. When the tree falls, it will damage other trees around it, opening up the canopy and leading to new and different growth in the cleared area. These mature hardwood trees, on average 100 years old, include species such as sapelli, frake, limbali, okoume, tiama, afromosia, and moabi. The trunks will be turned into plywood, planks and other wood products at sawmills. The wood is mainly sold in the European market. Photographed in Kayate, Oriental Province, Democratic Republic of Congo.
