Theodorus Gaza (c.1400-1475), Greek humanist. Gaza was born at Thessaloniki. He moved to Italy in 1430 and taught Greek. He had been involved in various meetings that attempted to reconcile the Greek and Latin churches, so he set about learning Latin. In 1447 he became professor of Greek at Ferrara and in 1450 he moved to Rome at the invitation of Pope Nicholas V. There he made translations into Latin of many Greek classics, notably by Aristotle. On the death of the Pope in 1455 Gaza was forced to move to Naples and then to Calabria where he spent the rest of his life. The translations he made and the methods of teaching classics were influential on many later humanists. This woodcut illustration comes from van Opmeer's Opus chronographicum orbis universi, published at Antwerp in 1611.
