Saint Albertus Magnus (1193-1280), German philosopher. Albertus was born at Lauingen and educated at Padua where he studied Aristotle. In 1223 he became a Dominican and studied theology at Bologna. He taught theology with great success in several cities. In 1260 he was appointed Bishop of Regensburg. Albertus was an early advocate for the coexistence of science and religion. As a scientist he was a gifted chemist, in the manner of the day writing on alchemy and the search for the Philosopher's Stone, although he is credited with the discovery of arsenic. In religion he applied the teachings of Aristotle to religious thinking, and he is one of just 33 Doctors of the Church ever created when he was canonised by Pope Pius XI in 1931.
