Bonaventura Vulcanius (1538-1614), Dutch humanist. Vulcanius was born at Bruges to a lawyer. He was educated at Ghent and Leuven, finally studying under Cassander at Cologne. He worked as secretary to nobility in Spain until 1570 at which time he was appointed professor of Greek at Cologne. He worked for printers in Basel and Geneva, translating works by Arrian. Eventually he was appointed professor of Greek at Leiden, where for the next 30 years he taught future scholars such as Heinsius and Grotius. This engraving is from van Meurs' Illustris Academia Lugd-Batava printed at leiden in 1613.
