Eyjafjallajokull eruption. Plume of ash rising high into the atmosphere following an eruption during the 2010 volcanic activity under the Eyjafjallajokull glacier in Iceland. The volcanic vents that produced this ash formed in March, with a major eruption taking place on 14 April, sending ash high into the atmosphere. This cloud of ash was then blown south and east by the wind, leading to the airspace over the UK and other European countries being shut down due to the hazard the ash posed to aircraft engines. The eruption also caused extensive flooding in the surrounding area due to meltwater from the glacier (snow and ice in foreground). Photographed on 19 April 2010.
