Smoke, steam and other volcanic gases are rising from the lava. The volcanic vents that produced this lava formed in March, with a major eruption taking place on 14 April, sending ash high into the atmosphere. The cloud of ash was then blown eastwards by the wind, leading to the airspace over the UK and other northern European countries being shut down due to the hazard the ash posed to aircraft engines. The eruption also caused extensive flooding in the surrounding area due to meltwater from the glacier (in background). Photographed on 12 April 2010.
