Limacodidae moth caterpillar on a leaf in a tropical rainforest. There are an estimated 1000 species of moths in this family worldwide. They are sometimes called slug moths because their caterpillars look like slugs and glide on a liquid lubricant. Some, as here, have spines that can cause a painful sting and help to defend against predators. The bright colours and patterns (here, circular patterns like eyes) also help to deter predators. Photographed in Ecuador.
