Paul Naim Berg (born 1926), US biochemist. Berg shared the 1980 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Berg's work, which was on fundamental studies of recombinant DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), was carried out in the 1960s and 1970s at Stanford University, California, USA. Concerned about the applications of the research, he helped organise the Asilomar Conference on Recombinant DNA in 1975, which set guidelines for biotechnology research. He was awarded the National Medal of Science in 1983. Berg retired from active research in 2000. Photographed circa November 1980.
