Rare earth oxide tracers. When used in hydrology research, these tracers (which can be detected in trace amounts) can be used to determine which parts of a water shed are eroding. Clockwise from upper centre, the elements whose oxides are present here are: praseodymium, cerium, lanthanum, neodymium, samarium, and gadolinium.
