Coloured illustration of funeral rites based on archaeological research at the Hallstatt Tombs. It illustrates funerary rites during the early Iron Age in the 1st millennium BCE.The corpse is placed on a funeral pyre and cremated. The ashes are then buried. The stone door of a tumulus is raised so that the cinerary urn, seen in the forefront of the picture, can be placed inside. Relations of the deceased attend the cremation in their finest clothes adorned with bronze and iron ornaments fashionable at the time. A mourner is throwing a precious object into the funeral pyre to honour the deceased.
