Coloured illustration of Bronze Age hunters in pursuit of a stag.Armed with bows and arrows, some of the hunters are mounted on horses. The bow and arrow dates from Neolithic times. It enabled hunters to hunt more efficiently and with far less risk to their own lives. Originally flint arrowheads were used. Later bronze and then iron replaced flint. During the Bronze Age more powerful composite bows made of wood, horn and sinew evolved. Bows and arrows continued to be used until they were eventually replaced by firearms. Horses were first domesticated as a source of food and milk. Archeological evidence suggests that by the early Bronze Age (circa 3000 BC) horses were being ridden for hunting giving the Bronze Age hunters a further advantage over earlier Neolithic people.
