Coloured illustration depicting Stone Age artists of the Upper Palaeolithic or Reindeer Period. Their art dates from 32,000 to 10,000 years ago. It consists of stationery art such as cave paintings and portable art comprising small moveable pieces and is often of great artistic merit. Portable art, as shown being made here, consists of pieces carved out of bone or stone, or engraved on to stone or slate, using pieces of flint as a tool. Some are modelled in clay. They often depict animals including mammoths, reindeer, horses, cattle and fish.Female figures connected with fertility, ornamental patterns, decorated tools, weapons and beads have also been found.
