Marcantonio Raimondi (c.1480-c.1534), Italian printmaker. Raimondi was born near Bologna in about 1480. He was apprenticed to a goldsmith and painter, but quickly showed more ability than his master. His real skill was engraving and in this he was strongly influenced by the work of Durer. Raimondi made copies of many of Durer's woodcuts and engravings, even including the 'AD' monogram. Durer was able to have this protected, an early example of intellectual property law. In about 1510 Raimondi travelled to Rome and came under the tutelage of Raphael. Raimondi refined his engraving technique by producing prints based on Raphael's work, in the meantime formalising many of the highlighting and cross-hatching tehniques used by engravers ever since. In 1524 he was briefly imprisoned for making a set of erotic prints.
