Knapweed Broomrape (Orobanche elatior) flower. Broomrapes are totally parasitic, in this case, drawing all nutrients from the roots of Greater Knapweed and the only indication of this on the plant, is the appearance of flower spikes. These have no chlorophyll and the leaves are rudimentary.
