Lava tube. View up through an extinct lava tube. Lava tubes form when the surface of a lava flow cools and solidifies, while the interior remains molten. The molten lava then flows through a hollow passage of cooled rock. When the lava stops flowing the empty tube is left. Photographed on Rangitoto Island, a volcanic island in the Hauraki Gulf near Auckland, New Zealand.
