Pig anatomy research. Researchers studying the facial structure of the pig. This research is being carried out by a team led by orthodontist Susan Herring at the University of Washington, USA. Here, she is preparing to make an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan of Blinky, the pig she uses to conduct this research. The facial structure of pigs is similar to that of humans, and her research shows that the chewing forces that shape the jaw, skull and brain are similar in pigs and humans, because both are omnivorous. Photographed in 2005.
