This site is one of four INFN (Italian national institute of nuclear physics) laboratories. The LNGS is located inside a mountain, and consists of three large experimental halls. The mountain shields the experiments from outside radiation, allowing particle physicists and astrophysicists to study rare interactions involving neutrinos and other particles. The Sun is the source of most of the neutrinos passing through the Earth.
