Arthur Howe Holdsworth (1780-1869), English merchant and inventor. Holdsworth was born in Dartmouth, Devon, to an influential family of merchants. He was a talented amateur artist but excelled at engineering. He rebuilt a paper mill with a single-span ceiling using the least amount of wood possible and devised a method for removing dyes from coloured rags for use as stock for fine linen paper. To help with the family?s maritime interests, he designed an improved ship?s rudder, watertight bulkheads and fireproof powder magazines for warships. Holdsworth served as Member of Parliament for Dartmouth and was Governor of Dartmouth Castle until he died.
