Maize, known also as corn, is the third most important cereal in the World after wheat and rice. Here, the cob reveals pairs of developing seeds (kernels) on it. At lower right, two early seeds have long protruberances called \silks\", string- like styles associated with each female ovary and down which the pollen tube grows to fertilise the egg. Once fertilised, the \"silk\" is discarded as the egg grows into a seed. Rows of seeds (kernels) are produced on the cob, forming the typical ear of maize. Magnification: x16 at 6x7cm size."
