The Kargah Buddha, circa 7th or 8th century. Ten kilometres from Gilgit at Kargah, a massive figure of the Buddha has been carved onto the cliff face. He has presided over the area since the 7th or 8th century, standing with his right hand in abhayamudra - the gesture of dispelling fear. The entire aspect and location of this Buddha are quite magical. The spot has clearly been chosen with care; beneath him is a quiet glade with a stream running through it and he faces the setting sun so that only when the last rays fall upon him, des the entire figure become illuminated.
