An old Himba woman gently shakes a large milk gourd to make butter outside her home. Her body gleams from a mixture of red ochre, butterfat and herbs. Her hair is styled in the traditional Himba way and is crowned with a headdress made of lambskin, called erembe. Her garments are also made of leather. Her unusual double-storied house is plastered with a mixture of earth and cow dung. The Himba are Herero-speaking Bantu nomads who live in the harsh, dry but starkly beautiful landscape of remote northwest Namibia.
