The famous 'White Lady' rock painting in Maack's Shelter at The Brandberg. The Brandberg, or Fire Mountain, is Namibia's highest mountain east of the Namib Desert and is renowned for its gallery of old rock paintings, which were first discovered by a German surveyor, Dr Richard Maack, in 1918. The 'White Lady' is now believed to be about one thousand years old and is anatomically male, rather than female. Moreover, the figure appears to be dark-skinned with white apparel. Much of the painting's detail has been lost over the years because photographers have repeatedly washed the figure to brighten its colours. Purros
