A Himba mother and children in traditional attire. Their bodies gleam from a mixture of red ochre, butterfat and herbs. The woman's long hair is styled in the traditional Himba way and is crowned with a headdress made of lambskin, which is called erembe. Her eye-catching anklets are strands of homemade metal beads threaded onto leather. All Himba girls wear their hair in plaits until adolescence. The Himba are Herero-speaking Bantu nomads who live in the harsh, dry but starkly beautiful landscape of remote northwest Namibia. Purros
