A man embroiders a Swahili hat along the waterfront at Kisingitini, a natural harbour on Pate Island. It takes hours of patience and great skill to finish a really fine hat, which will be prized by Muslims throughout the Lamu Archipelago and elsewhere. Kisingitini is the centre of the island's fishing industry with crayfish being the fishermen's prized catch. The island is the largest of the Lamu Archipelago lying in the Indian Ocean just north of Lamu and 150 miles north-northeast of Mombasa.
