A proud Samburu mother of two recently circumcised boys wears briefly their bird skin headdresses round her neck after they discard them during the lmuget loolbaa ceremony (the ceremony of the arrows) a month after their circumcision. She in turn will throw them away the same evening and ensure the family's cattle trample them under foot so that they will never be used or seen in public again. At the lmuget loolbaa ceremony the initiates will also remove their black leather cloaks and smear themselves for the first time with a mixture of animal fat and red ochre. Upon conclusion of this important ceremony, they become junior warriors of the Samburu tribe.
