Immediately a Samburu youth has been circumcised, his ritual sponsors and friends will draw blood from an ox by tying a rope tourniquet round the animal's neck and piercing the jugular with a short, sharp arrow. A mixture of blood and milk will be given to the initiate to drink while he recovers from the operation in his mother's house. The blood is symbolic of the blood lost during his operation.
