The entrance to the Palace of Gedi, part of the historic ruins of an important Afro-Arab town founded in the late thirteenth or early fourteenth century, covering some 45 acres. It reached the height of its prosperity in the middle of the fifteenth century but in the early seventeenth century was abandoned for reasons that are still unclear.
