Four elaborate toranas, or gateways, guard the Great Stupa, India's finest surviving Buddhist monument begun by the Emperor Ashoka in the third century BC. Despite a fragmented wheel of life, this northern torana is the best preserved and depicts scenes from the Buddha's life.
