Spider monkey, coloured historical artwork. Spider monkeys (Ateles sp.) are arboreal monkeys that inhabit the tropical forests of Central America and northern South America. They have long fingers for hooking around branches, and use their long prehensile tail as a fifth hand. They live in social groups of around 20 individuals, and feed mainly on fruit. This artwork was published in The Hand by Sir Charles Bell, in 1833.
