Panther chameleon (Furcifer pardalis), close-up view of head. This is a large chameleon, reaching almost 50 centimetres in length. It inhabits the forests of Madagascar, where its colouration serves as camouflage amongst the foliage. Like most chameleons, it can change colour according to its mood and environment. When threatened for instance, it turns a deep orange colour. This chameleon feeds mainly on insects, which are caught by a strike from its sticky tongue. The chameleon's eyes can move independently in all directions. The panther chameleon is one of the most placid of chameleons, making it a popular pet.
