False-colour scanning electron micrograph of the head of an adult green lacewing Chrysopa carnea. A prominent feature is the compound eye, coloured orange here, which consists of numerous individual facets called ommatidia. The antennae, between the eyes, are covered in sensory hairs. This species of adult lacewing is unusual in that it may spend the winter in human houses. Its colour then changes from green to red/brown. Twilight feeders, they prey on smaller insects, especially aphids & insect larvae. Magnification: x26 at 6x6cm size.
