Green algae colonies. Light micrograph of green algae cells (Volvox sp.). These two colonies are made up of approximately 500 individual flagellate cells, arranged in a glycoprotein filled sphere. The cells contain two cilia that are used to move the algae through water. Each cell has two eyespots and a chloroplast, which enable the colony to swim towards light and photosynthesise. The cells produce daughter colonies through asexual reproduction. The daughter colonies are held within the parent, which later disintegrate and the daughter colonies invert. Magnification x 36.
