Sorcery and flight. This nineteenth century artwork is showing the history of sorcery and flight in medieval times. There were stories of magical flights by witches, wizards, and the like, and the Church banned any attempts to experiment with flying machines. This artwork shows (across bottom, from left): a witch, the spirit raised by the witch, and a friar raising imps. A fairy ring is at centre. At upper left is an enchanted castle and devil creatures, and at upper right is a witch riding on a devil creature. Artwork from Astra Castra (Hatton Turner, London, 1865).
