Millennium Dome. View of the Millennium Dome in London, England, with the River Thames in the foreground. Designed to be largest dome in the world, it holds an exhibition to celebrate the arrival of the year 2000. The roof (white), which is 2 mm thick, is made of teflon-coated glass fibre fabric and is supported by a web of some 2600 cables. The cables are suspended from a circle of twelve 100 metre high steel masts (yellow). The interior floor area is 88,000 square metres, nearly twice the area of Atlanta's Georgia Dome, USA, previously the world's largest dome. Also seen in the background at upper right is the Canary Wharf complex. Photographed in 1999.
